The Origins of Unity
Unity began in the late 1800s when Charles and Myrtle Fillmore experienced personal healing and spiritual awakening through prayer and meditation. Their journey led to the founding of the Unity movement, focused on practical Christianity, healing, and the power of the mind in connection with Spirit.
They began publishing spiritual writings and lessons, which eventually grew into Unity School of Christianity and later Unity World Headquarters—still thriving today at Unity Village, Missouri.
In 1929, Unity Village was established as a center for prayer, education, and spiritual support. The campus features Mediterranean-style architecture, peaceful gardens, and sacred spaces that make it a spiritual sanctuary for seekers from around the world.
Unity Village Chapel (UVC), established in 1922, serves as the resident spiritual community at Unity Village, offering Sunday services, youth and family programs, weddings, memorials, and sacred events.
Our ministry is distinctly inclusive, welcoming people of all faith backgrounds, identities, and walks of life. We are here to help individuals awaken the Divine within and apply timeless spiritual principles in daily life.
Led by Rev. Erin McCabe, our community is centered in love, wisdom, and authentic spiritual practice. We are committed to fostering growth, connection, and compassionate service.

Unity is a spiritual movement founded on the power of affirmative prayer, practical Christianity, and inner transformation. It began in the late 1800s when co-founders Charles and Myrtle Fillmore turned to prayer and spiritual principles to overcome illness—and experienced profound healing.
Today, Unity is often called “a positive path for spiritual living.” It offers tools for anyone—regardless of faith background—to live a more joyful, abundant, and meaningful life.
Unity is a spiritual movement rooted in Christianity, but it is non-denominational and open to all. While it does include churches, centers, and ministries, Unity emphasizes spiritual education over dogma.
Unity:
Crosses traditional religious boundaries
Welcomes people from all faiths or no faith background
Encourages personal exploration and direct connection with the Divine
Many refer to themselves as Unity students or Truth students—lifelong learners seeking a deeper awareness of God in everyday life.
Unity's foundational ideas are simple but powerful:
God is good.
God is present within every person.
Our thoughts and beliefs shape our experiences.
Prayer and meditation align us with divine power.
We are here to express our divine potential.
These principles offer a practical approach to living—a way to heal, grow, and thrive spiritually, emotionally, and even physically.
In the 1880s, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore explored new ideas about health and spirituality. Myrtle healed from chronic illness using affirmative prayer. Inspired by this transformation, they began sharing these teachings through a small magazine called Modern Thought (later renamed Unity).
Their message: God is not distant, but within. And anyone can tap into divine power through prayer, positive thinking, and spiritual practice.
What started as personal discovery evolved into a global spiritual movement.
Silent Unity is the heart of Unity’s prayer ministry—active 24/7 since 1890. It began as a simple invitation to pray together in the evening. Today, it includes a team of trained prayer associates who answer over 600,000 prayer requests annually by phone, letter, and the Unity App.
No judgment. No fee. Just prayer.
Anyone, of any faith, can receive prayer support.
Prayer requests are held in sacred confidence.
Daily Word magazine was born from this very ministry.
Wherever you are, whenever you need, Silent Unity is there to pray with you.
Open-Ended Faith: Unity encourages seeking, not rigid belief. Even co-founder Charles Fillmore reserved the right to change his mind as he grew spiritually.
Non-Proselytizing: Unity doesn’t push its teachings. It simply offers them freely—through literature, prayer, and loving service.
Literature-Based Growth: Rather than spreading by missionaries, Unity has reached the world through books, magazines, and prayer correspondence.
Global Impact: From jungle villages in Nigeria to island communities in the Caribbean, Unity’s message has spread by word of mouth and the printed word.
